TINUBU'S INTERVENTION LEADS TO STRIKE SUSPENSION BY LABOUR

After President Bola Tinubu and the Senate intervened, the planned strike was halted, according to the Nigeria Labour Congress. The resolution was adopted after the Congress' National Executive Council meeting. In a brief message sent to our correspondent this morning (Thursday), the national treasurer Hakeem Ambali stated, "Protest suspended due to the Senate intervention and meeting with President Tinubu yesterday." According to the FTN, the President and the labor leaders had an urgent meeting as a result of the NLC protest that took place yesterday across the federation, including in the Federal Capital Territory. The NLC had initially stated that it would only call off its strike after the government demonstrated its seriousness. The Federal Government will meet with representatives of organized labor on Monday in an attempt to avert a nationwide strike called by the Nigeria Labour Congress. The NLC, on the other hand, has advised citizens to stock their homes with food, medicines, and other necessities ahead of the start of its seven-day strike to protest the removal of fuel subsidies and the rising cost of living in the country. The warning was issued because the strike would cripple the country by severely restricting movement as commercial transport operators withdraw their services, forcing markets, schools, and healthcare facilities to close. The Federal Government has been given a seven-day deadline by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to reverse any perceived anti-poor policies, such as the most recent increase in the price of gasoline at the pump, or face an indefinite nationwide strike beginning on August 2. According to Vanguard, the NLC has ordered all affiliates and state councils to start organizing workers and other Nigerians—including allies from the civil society—immediately in preparation for a protracted strike and large-scale demonstrations should its demands not be met. According to reports, the choice was made at a meeting of the NLC's Central Working Committee, or CWC, on Tuesday, July 25, at Abuja Labour House.
