FIRST LADY ENCOURAGES NIGERIANS AHEAD OF FUTURE PLANS

Ms Tinubu, who is also the National Chair of the initiative, said this after the second board meeting of the initiative held at her office in Aso Rock Villa in Abuja. According to a statement by media assistant Busola Kukoyi, the first lady ensured that all measures were taken to ensure a smooth start to the project in the 36 federal states and the FCT. Senator Tinubu explained that various state and local governments will be involved because the project is global for the federation. She pointed out that the core areas of the project include agriculture, health, education, social investment and economic empowerment. The Peace and Security Council “requests the AU Commission to undertake an assessment of the economic, social and security implications of deploying a standby force in Niger and report back to Council,” the bloc said, following strong differences on the matter. Army officers toppled President Mohamed Bazoum on July 26, prompting the West African regional bloc ECOWAS to threaten to use force to reinstate him. ECOWAS — the Economic Community of West African States — agreed to activate a “standby force” as a last resort to restore democracy in Niger.   Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, former Vice President of Nigeria and Presidential candidate of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 elections, and Presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People's Party (NNPP), Engr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, meet in Abuja on Tuesday night. The purpose or agenda of the meeting, which took place at Kwankwaso's residence in Abuja, was unknown at the time of this report. Sources reported that Atiku and Kwankwaso were known to be political opponents, a development that suggested the meeting could be called to close ranks and there was fierce opposition against the ruling Congress of the Progressive Congress. Godswill Akpabio, president of the Senate, and Tajudeen Abbas, speaker of the House of Representatives, have been sued for "the unlawful plan to spend N40 billion on 465 exotic and bulletproof cars for members and principal officials, and N70 billion as 'palliatives' for new members." The lawsuit was filed on Friday, August 11, 2023, in the Federal High Court in Lagos by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP). The lawsuit was filed shortly after Mr. Akpabio claimed that the Clerk of the National Assembly had transferred "holiday allowances" into "different bank accounts of senators." After President Bola Tinubu and the Senate intervened, the planned strike was halted, according to the Nigeria Labour Congress. The resolution was adopted after the Congress' National Executive Council meeting. In a brief message sent to our correspondent this morning (Thursday), the national treasurer Hakeem Ambali stated, "Protest suspended due to the Senate intervention and meeting with President Tinubu yesterday." According to the FTN, the President and the labor leaders had an urgent meeting as a result of the NLC protest that took place yesterday across the federation, including in the Federal Capital Territory. The NLC had initially stated that it would only call off its strike after the government demonstrated its seriousness. TRADE UNION AND NLC PROTEST AGAINST TINUBU'S N500 BILLION PALLIATIVE

  The Trade Union and the Nigeria Labour Congress have dissaproved the N500bn palliative proposed by President Bola Tinubu , stating that it is grossly inadequate to assuage the hardships confronting workers sequel to the fuel subsidy removal. Their demand is 300 per cent salary increment to enable workers cope with the challenges imposed by the deteriorating economic situation that came with the controversial fuel subsidy removal. The complaint, which was filed on Thursday, the House member  allegedly slapped 25-year-old Nicolas Frevola, a former legislative aide, from behind at an elementary school career day event in December 2022 and said, “I want ALL of that butt!” This incident happened without consent and in a room full of children, the lawsuit states. The complaint also details another incident in January at an event following Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ inauguration. During the event, Mr Basabe was “drinking an excessive amount of alcohol,” the complaint continues, before asking Mr Frevola an “inappropriate” question, which elevated to the elected official slapping Mr Frevola across the face.   Ex-President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, on Monday discloses  on the petrol subsidy removal ‘challenge’ that he left for his successor, Bola Tinubu , saying had it been the policy was implemented, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Tinubu would have lost in the Presidential Elections. Speaking through spokesman, Garba Shehu, via a statement, the ex-president however, commended the steps taken so far by the new administration in implementing the removal of petrol subsidy and attempt to unify the Naira exchange rate.
